My dad is now deceased, but was a B-17 co-pilot, shot down over Greece in
Dec 1943. He would not discuss his POW experiences except for the rare
humorous anecdote. One story he did tell was of a schooner he built from
bits & pieces of scrounged materials. I believe that is the same model
schooner pictured in the book, "Behind Barbed Wire" by Morris J. Roy,in the
center section of the book under the heading, "Kriegie Kraft Karnival." He
was also the camp "watch maker." Would love to hear from anyone who knew my
dad.

For almost 20 years ex-POW and Warrant Officer Thomas C. Stanley of No.61
Squadron RAF Bomber Command has been my friend. He was shot down over
Northern Holland in March 1942, wounded, taken POW, and sent to Dulag Luft
for interrogation and the Hohemark Lazarett. After was cured, Tom stayed to
work at the hospital as a medical orderly (one of the four British there)
under supervision of Dr. Felix Ittershagen. As such he has been able to
gather extra food and medical supplies for the often badly wounded airmen at
the hospital, for which he after the war was awarded with
not only the British MBE but also the American Bronze Star. I would like to
hear from ex-POW's whom have met and known Tom Stanley, and can tell me more
about him and his work at the Hohemark Lazarett. Also (if possible) I like
to have a photo of Dr. Ittershagen. Tom died in August 2000 of cancer. His
last wish was that his ashes would be buried in Holland on the same cemetery
where his five comrades in arms were buries in 1942, and I have been able to
fullfil that wish. I do intend to write a book about Tom. Any information
and photo's will be most welcome. Please respond!

lost my father over seven years ago to heart and lung problems. my father
never spoke much about his stay in the german prison camp, but he did say
that he rode out of it on a bike! he would also refuse to let my mother cook
rutabagas in our house. he stated that he had eaten enough rutabagas to last
a lifetime while in the camp. again, thank you for bringing back memories of
my father.
Alfred (Alf) died March 14th 2004. On his 9th mission the plane he was
navigating was shot down over Nazi occupied Denmark on February
15/16th,1944. He became a POW in Stalag Luft 3 and was liberated by the
British army May 8th 1945. He returned Manitoba, Canada, married his
sweetheart Marjorie Rutheford, Rosser Manitoba and graduated from the
University of Manitoba. He taught school, became a principal, superintendent
of schools, special education consultant, Public School Finance Board, and
retired at age 63. He was made an honorary citizen of the town of Faaborg
and attended the 700th anniversary of the town of Faaborg. He suffered from
Alzheimer's for many years and was well looked after by the Deer Lodge
Centre previously a Veteran's Hospital and the Bethania Mennonite Behavioral
Treatment Unit. He regressed to his war time years and lived a dreadful
final six month. He is now at PEACE. The Funeral was at Deer Lodge Centre,
Winnipeg, Manitoba,Canada, March 20th. His wife of 58 years sadly has
Alzheimer's and is well looked after on T3. He is survived by son Lorne and
his family. submitted by Lorna Stevens Lorne's wife, Alf's daughter-in-law.
We have many letters, telegrams, official documents, medals. We lack pictures
of him during the war years. We only have a couple of him while on leave
before going overseas. We think he is the far right person in a picture
scanned on the Documentary of the Canadian Great Escape....we'd love to
know....we'd love to share the letters we have, they maybe of interest to
others? We'd also like to contact the Faaborg Veteran's Association and let
them know he has died. Has anyone an address for us? 1-204-489-2487 290

My uncle Charlie has been gone several years now, but I discovered in his
sister's (my mother's)home after her death a booklet he wrote in 1950 about
his experiences in Luft IV, Lager D. He titled it "Barbed Boredom". It
includes a long roster of the ex-POW's of Luft IV and his accounting of many
of the same experiences as I've read on these sites.
I've enjoyed your work here--thank you for it, and thank you for your
service to our country. -pvh
ps--I don't think Uncle Charlie was your 'Tex' (being from NJ), but just in
case: he was a tall, lanky man with fair, wavy hair and a big smile. He was
a gunner and his plane "My Devotion" flew in the 'Purple Heart corner" of
formation.

about his war service. He was a waist gunner on a B-17, and was shot down on
May 10th 1944? He said something about going to Stalag 111 and then marched
to Stalag Luft 7A. I'm interested in anything about his flight crew and
plane, or his POW experience. I don't think I ever really expressed my
appreciation of my father when he was alive, but I would like to let my

Dec. 16, 1943(Bremen Raid), telegrams from the Sec. of War, a letter he
wrote to next of kin of his crewmates, and a newspaper article from his

My father was a radioman aboard a B-17 shot down over Merseburg, Germany and
arrived at Stalag Luft IVa in Dec. 1944. He was liberated by the 1st
American Army, 104th Division (Timberwolves) under the command of
Gen.Courtney Hodges a few miles outside the town of Schlaity, Germany. He
was sent to Bitterfelt for one week and then Rheims, France where Gen.
Eisenhower was having the German high command sign the "Unconditional
Surrender".
I am truly proud of my father and all who served in WWII. Especially the
POW'S, the few who went to that "other place" after the battle to help
define what it means to be American and Free.
I ran into H.R. Spicer one time- I was an Aviation Cadet, and he was CG of
FlyTAF. He dropped in for a quick inspection as we were the alernate base
and honor guard for a visit by President Eisenhower.

express my deep appreciation to you and all your colleagues, for the
sacrifices and contributions that you all made during those dark days. God

When I stumbled over this site, Mr. Perk Chumley did an excellent job
describing and diagraming Stalag Luft 1. I have searched since October 2003
for the kind of description and information included in his story. I am
researching and writing a WWII novel and needed this basic information. My
cousin was also in Stalag Luft I from February '44 through VE Day. During my
interview with him for our family genealogy book, he dictated his story and
from that day forward, I have been hooked on the history and bravery of the
men of WWII. We are so proud of them and thank God for men like them.
Jerri Gibson McCloud
Reading the information on this website made me cry. I have a lot of respect
for the POWs that made the sacrifice to defend our nation. I believe their
stories should be told--thank you for letting us know through this site
those stories. Some of the POWs do not want to talk about their experiences,
but it is enough to know their names and that they were once a POW...
Through their eyes, I hope that my generation and future generations can see
and remember the names of those who were POWs--"Remember...You are not
forgotten"....

in 2001.It was a traumatic experience for dad. You may remember, he was in a
wheelchair. HE passed away 10-17-03.We lost another great American. Thank you
for helping me understand
why my father was such a quite man, and unable to express his emotions. I
gained a much greater respect for him, and was able to heal many hurtful
feelings I had over his inability to express his love for himself and his
family. In essence the POW experience stole him from us, only many years after
the war stole your father from you. We will always miss our fathers, and no
words can express the sacrifices they made for us and our country. May God

William Henderson, of Arkansas, was also a B-17 radar operator. I do not
know most of his information, perhaps I will check with my aunt and cousins,
but I do know he was in England in 1944/45, and was on 17's. Worked for RCA
for decades after the war, and passed away about two years ago.

retired a Col. at Robins AFB, Georgia in the late 70's and died shortly
after. If anyone has any information or remembers him, please post it or
contact me. I would really like to know more about him. Thank you all for
your service to our country and any info you might send. Sincerely: A Proud

Michael was my dad. While he was in POW camp he did a lot od writing and
drawing and planning for "the future" (eg. a home he would build, food,
holidays, etc.). I still have that notebook. But his most incredible
accomplishment is the story that he wrote. It is only 2-3 pages long, but it
is an amazing chronicle of the day of his last flight, the capture, and some
first impressions. The last line gives me goosebumps -- "...and for him, the
war was over...."I have transcribed the story on to word document, and my dad would be
honored to have others read it.
He suffered all the rest of his life with memories of POW camp, and died on
July 4, 1977.
I look forward to a response. Your site is wonderful!

I stumbled over your site while researching the ranks of B-17 crewmembers. I
have almost completed writing a WWII historical fiction novel that partially
takes place in Snetterton, England.
Please may I express my appreciation for all the heroes of WWII and those
that followed. The bravery that has unfolded before me and overwhelming. How
so many gave their lives that we may be free if outstanding and not nearly
heard enough about in this century. I hope my novel will reach millions that
have no idea of what really took place and what these men went through. God
bless all of those still living and May God have mercy on the souls of those
who have passed on. You have made me proud to be an American.

Hi ~ Greetings!
The reason I came to this site is because I am an art student of Sargeant
Lester H. Russell, alias "Russ" Russell. He told me about your website,
where his art is seen as "Kriegie Humor", and I truely found it interesting.
He is an incredible teacher...of art, humor, and life! Great guy.
I have also worked for the Collings Foundation in Stowe Mass. where the WWII
vets restore and show warcraft. I sewed seats and head pads when they were
restoring the interior of their B17, Flying Fortress. It was very moving for
me to lie down in the gunner's position in a B17, and be able to get into
the tight position for sewing! I was right where a guy would have been for
fighting. It made me think alot about my blessings of never having to
fight...and thank those who have.
Thank you for your, input on this website, which honors these artists of
WWII.
Thank you, Jane S.

In collaboration with the British Psychological Society, I am researching
the collection of dreams (391 in all) assembled by Major Hopkins from his
fellow officer prisoners. I have been unable to locate Oflag VIIc, with
which the notebooks were stamped, but after his death in captivity,
September 1942, he was buried in Hildburghausen. There is a Lazarett IXc
nearby, and this (according to the British Red Cross map) served Stalag IXc
in Bad Sulza. The notebooks were found after the war in 'an abandoned camp'
by an officer working with SHAEF, and returned to England. Can anyone help
with the location of Oflag VIIc, or of a camp (possibly a transit camp) at
Laufen? Thanks for any help. David Stevens, Senior Lecturer in Psychology,

My Uncle was Paul D. Stillions, a former WWII POW. He had many disabilities
from injuries and died two years ago with about a 40 percent VA rating. I
lived almost a thousand miles from him but near the end I was urging him to
seek a higher disability rating. Unfortunately, he was too ill to travel to
the VA for evaluation before he died. After two years of trying and being
denied widow's benefits, my Aunt did get benefits approved. I salute you for
the help you offer because, in my opinion, she did not get strong help from
the DAV folks who helped her. I was too far away to help much but did push
her to keep trying and she was finally successful in gaining approval for
widow's benefits.

I have spent many hours/years searching for my father, GARY HANBRAUGH. I was
born in Jan.1941 and raised by my maternal grandparents who told me that my
father left prior to my birth to "ferry planes from Canada to England"
(civilian ? military?)and was never heard of again. Can any of the visitors
to your wonderful site point me to places that list the names of those "who
served" prior to our official entry into WW11 ? I am aware that many of them
did not survive but cannot find either USA or Canadian RCAF records listing
names. Thank you in advance for any clues and help.

Hammy Rice, now deceased, is my brother-in-law. His wife, my sister, lives
at the above address.
Hammy flew the Thunderbolt, P-47, out of England, escorting bomb groups over
France. He was shot down over Amiens france by a German Ace. He spent a year
in a POW camp (my sister has a book about the camp) and liberated at war's
end. It was not Stalag Luft
1. When he was courting my sister in '45/'46, I was captivated listening to
Hammy and my brother Ace (who piloted 50 missions in the Martin Marauder,
B-26, from Dakar, Africa to Foggia, Italy ... 2 purple hearts) discuss their
separate experiences. The fighter pilot and the bomber pilot. Hammy's "shot
down story" was very interesting. He was actually
rescued from a group of Wermacht thugs, who captured him, by the German Ace
who shot him down.
I wish there is some way i could get more official info on where he was
stationed, his group, etc. etc.

another account written of his Company "F" Troop, where an account of the

Though I am not a POW, nor did I ever know anyone who was, I wrote this poem
after my father passed away. He served in the US Marines, and throughout my
lifetime I heard his stories, saw his pain, and never quite knew what I
could possibly do to fulfill his life. So this poem came to me as a
devotion, an honor, and tribute to him. I pass it along to all of you who
have given so much. For all you have done, our Flag still waves.
A Salute Through Time
"I" salute you today,
For all which you've done.
The explanation? Our freedom was won!
"We" salute you today,
For all that you mean.
It's surely how we view heaven, you see?
"They" salute you today,
Generations through time,
They respect and honor your service with pride.
"Our" Country is free
from what you have done,
You, plus one-hundred-million and one.

In putting my mother's story (see her name above on the web) I am looking
for anecdotes from her peers, maybe you even knew her, and particularly the
Studio Club which was a firm favourite for many.
Also any who may have spent time with the French Foreign Legion, whether at
Trentham Park, Narvik, North Africa - her husband, hence my father, was
killed at El Himeimat with Amilakvari on 24 October 1942. Etienne was an
Adjudant-chef then, and decorated with Legion of Honour (Military), Medaille
Militaire, Croix de Guerre*", as a younger man he was in Indochina 1935-40.
(I would also add: "a moi la Legion!" as a daughter to those who would
respond)
Any stories, details, contacts, photos, etc., would be very gratefully
received.

executed at Ravensbruck in end January - beginning February 1945. Again
thanks.

yearning to learn from the actual veterans of WWII. Had the pleasure of
meeting Chuck Yeager, Bud Anderson and Guenther Rall last summer at an

My dad was a crewman on a B-17 shot down over Merseburg, Germany on Nov. 21,
1944 just after releasing bombs over the Luana Oil Refinery. He was captured
by the SS,interrogated, and sent to Stalag Luft IV. He rarely spoke of the
war and did so just to satisify his inquisitive son's ears. He was careful
to limit the subject matter to the good friends he made and the B-17. He
truly adimired the plane and once took me to an air show to see the old "war
birds".
My father became the Memorial Chairperson for the 398th Bomb Group and
passed away just before the memorial was dedicated at Nuthampstead, England.
Undoubtably, we owe our freedom to all who served and sacrificed in WWII. I
hope one day to make a bicycle tour along the route of the "Death March" to
help me better appreciate and understand what my father and all those other
young Americans went through.

I was looking for the author of this untitled poem that my father copied
into a letter to his mom during WW2 while he was in Germany. The first verse

This they betrayed and left, this forest heavy
With fine long timbers ripe for the woodsman's axe.
These villages odorous with intimacy with the land,
Cobblestone streets with the bricked in wagon tracks.

I am searching for any information regarding our original navigator, First
Lieutenant James W. Salsbury, O-736031. We were the John Paul Jones, Jr.
crew of the 450th Bomb Group, 723rd Squadron. Our crew flew out of Manduria,
Italy and were known as the "Cottontails." Lt. Salsbury had volunteered for
an extra mission and flew with another crew that fateful day in the summer
of 1944. Since then we, (the surviving bombardier and co-pilot), know
nothing of his fate.
He was from Billings, Montana. Was married and had a child. Any information
will be welcome.
I am researching U.S. citizens who enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force
prior to Pearl Harbor. Many would end up as POW's while serving with the
RCAF/RAF and USAAF for those who transferred to the U.S. Forces.

I was a P47 pilot attached to the 366 fighter squadron of the 358th fighter

Our spirits were bouyed when those fellow prisoners already on the inside
who were leaning against the fence and chanting that old familiar phrase,
"you'll be sorry".
I found this web site among many others while looking up "Camp Lucky Strike"
on Google. The photos bring back many memories. Unfortunately I don't have
the blue book that we all were issued to record our friends names, our
mothers recipes, our thoughts for the future, and many other things that

Sgt Ted Bliss was a navigator in 7 Sqn RAF, based when shot down at
Oakington (Cambridgeshire); previously at Odiham (Hampshire). Shot down in
May 1942 near Gent in Belgium, following a raid on Mannheim Germany. He was
at Sagan, Heydekrug and Falingbostel – at least. He was on the long marches
too. I've no idea of any of his compound numbers or room mates. However, I
do know that he got a medal from the Red Cross in connection with his
organising football.
Although he has attended RAF bomber command & maybe other reunions, he
doesn’t get about about much now because his memory & awareness are failing.
Also his hearing / eyesight have been better.
I and my sisters + his grandson at least would be delighted to make contact
with any of his former mates in order to find out more and maybe visit.

My dad Graham Turner was based at RAF Oakington until 1943 when he went to
India. He was responsible for developing and printing reconnaissance photos
from missions like your dad flew on. He used to go to the WHITE HORSE pub in
Oakington - still there - and there used to be writings on the walls by air
crews.

Lt. Sharps was my grandfather and if anybody has any information about him
or knew him, I would be very interested in hearing about it. (He
unfortunately died when my mother was just 2 years old.) He was pilot of a
B-17 plane that was shot down in January 1944 over Berlin. He then spent 16
months in Stalag Luft 1. Thank you. Have a great new year!

i found your site extremely interesting! it fills in some info i've wondered
about for many years now. my ex-husb & i lived in temp qtrs for about 1
year-late 1970 to 1971. our son was born while we were there. i hope to read
every word as time allows! i always "got the creeps" when i went to the post
office & laundry because they were in the small cells where our pilots had
previously been held, but i didn't have any more info than that. i remember
the swastika in the beam at the o club & have a small crystal brandy snifter
engraved with an image of the o club on a table in my home to this day!
thank you for such a thorough history!
