Wing Commander Watkins
joined the RAF in 1937, starting his career in No25(F) Squadron at RAF Hawkinge, progressing from ground crew to Airgunner/Observor on Hawker
Demons. Fairly early on he transferred to Bomber Command as a Navigator and
was on his fourth tour, commanding No15 Squadron at Mildenhall when, as
Master Bomber on a support raid on Heinsberg in mid November, 1944, his
Lancaster was shot down apparently by a German Nightfighter. The sole
survivor, on fire and unable to exit the plane until it broke up, his
problems didn't finish when he landed. He passed away in June 1965.
This is believed to be a PBY Catalina flying boat.
